Hike #16: L'Escaillon et le chemin de la glace à Nans les Pins

Boucle dans la forêt de la Ste Baume. Elle permet de découvrir le Gouffre (situé au milieu d'un amoncellement de rochers moussus) et des panoramas sur la plaine de Nans bordé au loin par la chaîne du mont Aurélien.

Une ascension d’environ 1 heure nous permettra de profiter d’une vue dégagée sur les Monts Aurélien et Olympe, avec la chaîne de la Sainte-Victoire au loin.

Sur la descente, le sentier surplombera la plaine de Nans avec des points de vue réguliers sur la grande barre rocheuse de la montagne Sainte-Baume

De la Plaine agricole nous pourrons observer le Castrum du vieux Nans, perché sur la colline St Croix. De là nous pourrons comprendre le phénomène de déperchement, qui eut lieu à la fin du XVIe siècle, pendant lequel les habitants quittent le castrum pour aller vivre dans la plaine.

 

Circuit in the forest of Ste Baume. We will discover the ‘chasm’ (located in the middle of a heap of mossy rocks) and panoramic views over the plain of Nans bordered in the distance by the Mount Aurélien mountain chain.

A steady climb for approximately one hour will allow us to enjoy a clear view to Mont Aurelién and L’Olympe, with the Sainte Victoire chain in the distance.

On the descent the path overlooks the plain of Nans, with frequent views of the rocky bar of the Sainte-Baume Mountain.

From the agricultural plain we will be able to see the Castrum du Vieux Nans, perched on St Croix hill.

From there we can understand the phenomenon of desperation, which took place at the end of the 16th century, during which the inhabitants left the castrum to go and live on the plain.

Directions:

From Aix take the A8 motorway direction Ste-Maximin-La-Saint-Baume. Take Exit 34 and then D560A, D560 and D80 in the direction of Nans-les-Pins. In Nans-les-Pins take a left turn onto D280/ Pl. Victor Dedieu. Park in the large car park next to the ‘Utile’ supermarket.
