Hike #14: Sainte Baume Leaders: Sharon; Chris; Gerda Date: February 04th, 2025 |

A stunning hike which starts with a walk through the forest flanking the north side of the Sainte Baume before climbing, quite steeply (and needing the use of your hands at times) to the ridge. Here we will be rewarded with 360o panoramic views towards the Mediterranean coast, Marseille, Aix region and the Sainte Victoire and in the distance the southern Alps and the Mont Ventoux. We will walk towards the west along the ridge, past all the landmark antennas and pylons to the highest point of the mountain – Le Pic de Bertagne. From here there is a relatively steep scramble down to the Col de Bertagne and then returning to the cars via the Chemin de Fer. This hike is highly recommended but it is long with a couple of climbs both up and down which will require the use of your hands. It is NOT recommended for those who suffer with vertigo.
Cette randonnée incroyable commence en forêt du côté nord du massif de la Ste Baume. Nous commencerons d’abord par monter doucement puis nous passerons par des passages assez raides (certains endroits nécessitent de s’aider des mains) pour arriver sur la crête. Un endroit magnifique avec des vues panoramiques sur la côte Méditerranéenne, Marseille, la région aixoise et la Sainte Victoire et au loin nous verrons le Mont Ventoux et les Alpes enneigées. Nous suivrons un long moment la crête jusqu’au point culminant du massif, le Pic de Bertagne (1042m) Avant d’arriver au pic nous devons contourner quelques bâtiment et antennes de l’aviation civile. Depuis cet endroit magnifique nous entamerons la descente assez raide jusqu’au col de Bertagne. Nous retrouverons le parking en passant par le Vallon du Chemin de Fer. Nous vous recommandons cette randonnée sportive mais elle est assez longue et nous devons signaler quelques passages techniques aussi bien à la montée qu’à la descente qui nécessitent l’usage des mains. Cette randonnée n’est PAS conseillée aux personnes qui souffrent de vertiges.
